World Health Organization Sounds Concern Over Severe Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Less than one in 10 individuals that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it issues its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and continuous care," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to widespread availability to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, notes the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Despite the current most optimistic outlook, the supply of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the health organization.

The recommendation calls on countries and companies to increase access, via measures including voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core component of a leading brand – is set to lapse in a number of countries in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so users eat less.

Individuals commonly begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Evidence indicates patients may see weight return a year later of halting the drug, as their typical food cravings resume.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your risk for experiencing health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight impacts people in every country and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
