This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
